Herald: An Interactive Period Drama
Freelance Project at Wispfire, Part-time Released February 22nd, 2017 - PC, Mac & Linux
Herald is an interactive period drama inspired by 19th century colonialism. It plays as a mix between an adventure game and a visual novel.
You are Devan Rensburg, a man who struggles with his mixed heritage. As steward of the HLV Herald it’s your job to take care of all the passengers, be they rich or poor, important or downtrodden. Set during a time of great inequality and injustice, players are given the choice how to deal with various dilemmas resulting from 19th century colonialism. Herald Book I & II were released for PC, Mac and Linux on Steam, Humble and GOG on the 22nd of February, 2017. Product keys are available on request. I was in charge of the Herald's marketing and worked on the story content together with lead-writer and business director Roy van der Schilden. I have posted a selection of writing samples from the game for you to read below. |

Roy van der Schilden
Lead Writer and Business Director at Wispfire "While working with Nick, I have come to know him as a thorough researcher who thinks three steps ahead while making creative decisions. He takes his inspiration for writing from many varied sources and can weave these into something entirely new. Because of this talent he is also great to work with in a team because he doesn't hesitate to throw in ideas that can inspire others during the creative process." Anna Mattaar Freelance Writer at Wispfire Co-author of 'In Memory: A Tribute to Sir Terry Pratchett' "For a history-based game, research is vitally important, and Nick always seems to have some interesting facts ready to use in Herald’s texts, whether about the invention of the telescope or the abolishment of slavery. Moreover, he is able to use that research to write believably from the perspective of characters with backgrounds and worldviews contrary to his own, sketching the ideas of a different age in a lively and convincing manner."
