Hi there! My name is Nick Witsel, and I'm a freelance game writer and designer.
I recently worked on Herald, a unique story-driven adventure game released for Steam.
Next to Herald I recently worked as lead designer and producer on an applied game project for Stichting Lezen & Schrijven - a non-profit specializing in the needs for people with illiteracy. I also worked briefly on an unannounced applied game by YipYip as scenario writer.
I graduated, with distinction, in 2014 at the University of the Arts Utrecht with a Bachelor in Game Design and Development. That same year, I was also awarded a Scholarship by the International Game Developers Association for GDCE/Gamescom.
My graduation project, The Passenger, was very positively received by developers from Telltale, Bioware and Obsidian, whom I showed it to at GDC.
Over the course of my study I briefly worked as producer on the asymmetrical multiplayer game The Flock (2014, Vogelsap), lead numerous story-driven student projects, and designed and implemented the in-game tutorial for the indie hit Reus (2013, Abbey Games) which was recently ported to Xbox One and PS4.
During the weekend I work as quest designer for Lordbound, a DLC-sized expansion for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It's being developed by professionals from the industry to learn more about AAA development. I write, design and script quest content using the game’s proprietary tools. It's set to release Q4 2017.
Creative Director and Co-Founder of Abbey Games
"Nick is a driven, communicative designer with a special passion for storytelling. I've had the pleasure to work with him, and he has always worked on his tasks with precision, dedication and vision. Nick is also quite courageous, and not afraid to ask for help or information when he feels it's important, a trait that is easily overlooked."
Freelance Writer at Wispfire, working with me on Herald
Co-author of 'In Memory: A Tribute to Sir Terry Pratchett'
"For a history-based game, research is vitally important, and Nick always seems to have some interesting facts ready to use in Herald’s texts, whether about the invention of the telescope or the abolishment of slavery. Moreover, he is able to use that research to write believably from the perspective of characters with backgrounds and worldviews contrary to his own, sketching the ideas of a different age in a lively and convincing manner."
Level Designer at Creative Assembly by Day
Team Leader & Creative Director on Lordbound by Night
"Nick Witsel is an incredibly versatile member of our team, providing sidequests and dungeons complete with set-dressing, detailed scripts and AI. His environments are memorable and fun to play with fantastic lighting and an eye for detail. His ability to quickly iterate on his work, and a good understanding of technical constraints, allow him to rapidly develop content; which he finishes with an incredible layer of polish. When finished, his levels tell stories of their own, and are vibrant with atmosphere."
Product Owner at Black Bear Solutions, formerly artist at Abbey Games
"I've worked with Nick on a number of different projects, both as students and as professionals, and each time he has proven himself to be reliable, creative, communicative and, above all, tenacious in his vision.
Nick has struck me as someone who is driven and looking to push boundaries, both in running a projects as well as executing on a vision. That skill is something I appreciate a great deal"
Freelance Product Owner, Designer and Illustrator
2D Artist for Blue and You
"Nick was always one of the more social and outgoing students in our class, and during the projects we worked on together he put this to full use. For Blue and You, he held the ropes of the majority of the project, including contacting voice-actors and writing the entire script. I had a pleasant time working with him for multiple projects, and would surely do so again. Nick is an asset to any team."
